Patong, Phuket

by johnaalex - last update: Jan 16, 2008

My favourite island

Patong Beach January 2008
Phuket is know seen by many as being past its best and far too busy to get a true taste of Thailand. I accept that this is not the idyllic paradise it once was, but it remains my favourite holiday destination. Nearly all of my 30 trips to Thailand have included a stay in Patong and I will be going back in 2008 and hopefully for many years after!

In Janaury 2006 things were almost back to normal, with tourist numbers getting back to pre-tsunami levels. Remember the best way to help the people on the island get their lives back to normal is for us tourists to go their and have a good time. Talk about "win win"! The hotels, bars and restaurants are there waiting for you!

There are still some beautiful beaches on the island and the picturesque Phang Nga bay is within easy reach. If you want luxury close to a deserted beach then go to the Marriott Resort at the north of the island close to the Sarasin Bridge which connects the island to the mainland. However, if you don’t mind the crowds and want a wide choice of great restaurants, bars etc then Patong is the place.

Pros:"Plenty of nightlife and some great beachs"
Cons:"Over commercialised especially in Patong"
In A Nutshell:"Better than Pattaya, busier than Koh Samui"
