Gourmet Chicken - Seoul

Gourmet Chicken

Gourmet Chicken: Yum! --> roast chicken

They have a sit-down restaurant, as well as doing local deliveries.

Their specialty is stuffed steam-roasted chicken that is then roasted/bbqed. Very yummy, and healthy to boot.
Decent menu, and prices are very good for Seoul.

They deliver untill 11:00, so it's decent for a late dinner, too.

Favorite Dish: I like the Chicken burrito, 4,500 won. Apart from the whole roasted chickens, they also do chicken fingers, salads, nachos, stuffed potatoes, and different rice dishes.
Also cool, this is one of the few places in Korea where you can find chili, and it's very good.

Well stocked beer fridge too, but the imports aren't cheap.

Address: Daichi location is 1 1/2 blocks east of Hanti yuk.

Comparison: less expensive than average

Directions: There are three locations now, with more coming soon.
Daichi, Kyodae, Ichon. Check their website...

chickentruck OM NOM NOM - Seoul

chickentruck OM NOM NOM

various Chicken Trucks, all over the place: Amazing BBQ

One of my favorite meals in Korea, courtesy of the venerable and elusive Chicken Truck.

Sometimes difficult to find, as they are always on the move.
It's somewhat illegal to sell food like this, so they are often chased around by the police. They move from one area to the next, but often keep the same weekly schedule.

Favorite Dish: These nomadic mobile BBQs offer up a delicious meal of whole skewered chicken, usually stuffed with rice and ginseng.
Usually one chicken for 6,000 won, or two for 10,000 won.

A worthwhile meal to try, if you can find one.

tip: get his business card, so you can call and find out his schedule.

Pho Hanoi

Pho Hanoi: Vietnamese

Craving some vietnamese pho, we tried this place out as the usual spot (Hoasen) was closed for a holiday.

Food tasted good, but was relatively a bit more expensive, with less seafood in the soup...

At least it was open on New Years Day, though.

Address: Gangnam Station

Located in Sinchun (by Jamsil). This neighborhood is a lively place, full of hoffs, restaurants, Korean-style clubs, love-hotels, and DVD rooms.

One of the many restaurants you'll pass while wandering through the neighborhood.
The food was good! And not expensive.

Spaghettia - Seoul

Spaghettia

Spaghettia: decent spaghetti

Spaghettia is a chain restaurant, serving spaghetti, salads, and other dishes.

The food is good, and the portions are a decent size (but not as big as they used to be!)
They serve bottled beer, colas, and juice-aids for drinks.

Pricing is average, expect to spend about 8-15,000 pp to leave full. They also offer various combo meals for two or more people, at a discount.

Comparison: about average

Directions: These restaurants are all over the place. You can't miss their bright orange sign...

Brasilia Steakhouse - Seoul

Brasilia Steakhouse

Brasilia Steakhouse: Give Your Tastebuds an Orgasm!

WOW! is all I can say... my new favorite restaurant.

What's special about Brasilia? --> This place serves the best steak I've yet had in Asia.

Even better? --> It's steak dish is cheaper than every other restaurant in Seoul.

The best for last: --> IT'S ALL YOU CAN EAT!

There are at least two branches in Seoul. One near Gangnam station, and the other next to CoEx, near Samsung station. This place is good, I imagine quite a few more will be franchised soon...

Favorite Dish: They only serve one menu item, foodwise: steak buffet! It is grilled to order, fresh, and the way you want it.

25,000 for dinner, or 30,000 with a glass of house red.
Draft beer is 2,500 won, and unlimited cola is 3,000.
Lunchtime is 20,000, served 11:30-2:30.
Dinner is from 5:30-10:30.
5:30 to 6:30 is happy hour, buy a beer get another free.

They offer three different cuts. If it's your first time there, get your first three servings as one of each, and then choose your favorite.
You get a big bowl of salad, along with a few other side dishes, placed on your table. It's all you can eat, too.

Comparison: about average

Directions: Gangnam station, exit 6. Halfway between Gangnam and Kyobo bookstore is a road... Turn left onto the road, and walk about 30 feet. You'll see the small basement entrance/sign on your right.

Taco Chilichili - Seoul

Taco Chilichili

Taco Chilichili: Decent Mexican

The food here is good! Made when you order, with fresh ingredients.
Not expensive, and decent sized portions.

There are two restaurants, one in Daichi (Hanti station) and a newer one in Itaewon.

The Daichi restaurant is a narrow, multi-levelled building. Has free internet upstairs. Also a patio out front for summer.
Haven't been to the newer Itaewon branch...

Favorite Dish: I like the Chicken Burrito, for 6,000 won. It's delicious, and large enough to fill you up.

Menu items range from 3,000 to 7,500 won.
Tacos, quesadillas, fajitas, burritos, enchiladas, and nachos.
Offer beer, too.

Address: Daichi-dong

Comparison: less expensive than average

Directions: Hanti station, exit 2. Walk to the end of the Lotte building, about 80ft.
Right across the street from the Lotte, can't miss it.

Salam: Turkish Halal

The food is authentic Turkish, and delicious!
They offer various meat and vegetarian dishes, as well as soups, desserts and drinks.
You can finish your meal with a hookah of flavoured tobacco, too.

Pricing is very reasonable.

Favorite Dish: I like the donair kebab sandwiches (4,000 won) and the lamb shishkebab (6,000 won).

Address: Located in Itaewan area, as part of the mosque.

Comparison: about average

Directions: Restaurant is located at the base of the mosque, to the right of the main entrance.

Indian hof - Seoul

Indian hof

Indian: BBQ smoked chicken

When I first came to Korea (in 2002, for World Cup) every neighborhood was inundated with smoked chicken BBQ restaurants. Now these restaurants are not so common.
A shame, since I love this style of chicken. It's delicious, and much healthier for you than the typical fried chicken you find here everywhere.

Favorite Dish: This restaurant serves a few dishes. I come here for the smoked chicken BBQ.

Very simple to make:
Take a smoked chicken half and hack it up with a big cleaver.
Grill on a BBQ.
Serve. Either with hotsauce, or with a dish of salt to season.

They also serve Gullbangi (sea snails w/ hot chili sauce), Ddukboki (rice cake w/ hot chili sauce), and fried chicken. Also, typical Korean beer on tap, as well as various bottles of beer and harder stuff in the fridge.

One BBQ chicken costs 12,000 Won. Comes with coleslaw and a Coke.

Address: Songpa-gu, between Songpa and Seokchon stations.

Comparison: about average

Directions: Take the north-east exit from Songpa station. Walk along the main Songpadaero street untill you get to the next main intersection. Turn right (east) and walk for approx 75-100m.
Restaurant is on your right.

It actually tastes better in Korea than in Canada, though.

You would be hard-pressed to walk 2 blocks in any direction without seeing one...
