Introduction to Tuaran

Tuaran is a township about 20 minutes from KK. It is well located as a stop between Mt. Kinabalu, Kota Belud and is near some very nice beaches. When I was just a young boy (too many moons ago) my parents always used to drive there to visit friends and it seemed like another world. It was still a rustic countryside with cow dung everywhere. A new road has now been built so the cows hang around the old road, and I think tourists will enjoy going down those lanes.

The 5 star Shangri-la Rasa Ria resort is at Tuaran and takes some of Dalit beach with it. It's a nice beach which is worth a look, either from the hotel or the public portion (I think the public part is quite decent). Tuaran also has an abandoned horse racing track-it was built many years ago when Sabah was still swimming in logging money but no one wanted to move the races from Tanjung Aru (pretty much next to the international airport runway). It seems incredible now seeing that it's such a short hop but in those days it was a much longer trip on a much worse road.

Tuaran is also famous for its Tuaran Mee, or Tuaran Noodles, though it's a hit and miss with the shops serving the dish. At the end of the township is a small market and next to it is a hanging suspension bridge joining a neighbouring village. It's used by motorbikes and people alike so watch out!! It's a good spot to take photos.
