Mt. Kinabalu & General Areas

by syetan - last update: Jun 3, 2007

The main area

Mt. Kinabalu from Kg. Mengkabong
There's not much to add to what has probably already been written. The National Park encompasses a fairly large area and even without climbing the mountain one can easily spend 2-3 days around there and travel the local towns like Ranau and Kundasang but generally just relax.

My main gripe is that the running of the park has now been privatised (very dodgily indeed) and now the cost of visiting and climbing has increased tremendously compared to before. Sure some of this $$$ goes towards conservation but I've no doubt whatsoever that plenty disappears into the firm's coffers as profit. Certainly I fail to see much improvement in terms of facilities over the years, so just where is the $$$ going?

For the nearby Poring Hot Springs and Canopy Walk see my 'Kampong Poring' page.
At Mesilau

Mesilau entry point

These days a new entry point, Mesilau, is available for entry. It is about a 30 minute drive from teh main entry-much quieter, wortha visit.
The increasingly decrepit War Memorial

Visit Kundasang and the war memorial

Kundasang is a small locality near the park and on the way to the Mesilau entry point-there is always a small market selling fruits and vegetables-a white face attracts a premium!!!

There's also a war memorial there worth visiting. You can go to Perkasa Hotel for a drink and to relax.
