"Beaufort Township & Train Station" Beaufort by syetan

Beaufort township is a township which I know as a stop on my way to white-water rafting at Padas river. During early Western settlement it was an important spot, which is why there is a trainline there but economic development soon occurred elsewhere and it got left back somewhat. It seems rather small, yet every fifth person I meet in Sabah claims to be from Beaufort town!!
You usually get 30-60 minutes between arriving at the train station and waiting to catch the train to start the white-water rafting adventure. Venture to the township. There's a central market where you can buy fruits and tid-bits, and a few rows of shops including coffee shops where you can sit down to grab a bite to eat. These shops, on rickety wooden floors remind me of some coffee shops in KK when I was very young, now all gone, victims of modernisation (or fire...). Don't use their toilets!!!
Sorry, just realised that all my photos of Beaufort revolve around the train station...next time...
The first thing to note is toilet entry is 20 cents-this can be important when you consider you have been on a bus for quite a while coming in from KK. The toilets are now much improved, but to be frank, that still doesn't say much.
The train station is very small and the train track was built by the Romans in their heyday; ok, so I lie but it's still very old. The new track is underway and should be ready soon. There's a small newsagent selling tid-bits there. There's only 1 platform and the train comes when it chooses to come, if at all.
The train line is very important for people living near Beaufort overlooking Padas River-it's the only way to get to work or school and get provisions in. Once when the train line had to stop operating for 2 weeks no one could get to school.
This unreliability means that the white water rafting operators sometimes hire their own train so we $$$ paying people can go rafting and actually get back to Beaufort in the evening.
You're probably on your way white-water rafting so you should be wearing slippers or sandals-your shoes will get wet... more travel advice
Some of these coffee shops still have wooden planks as floors and do creak!! There are quite old and can seem rather... more travel advice
