Gent - a Visit in Winter

Beautiful Historic City of Friendly People

Gent by Night
Having a birthday in November has often resulted in my being in strange or unfamiliar places around that time of year. This year it was in Gent and was very special.
Everything about the trip - from our rail journey up to London, departure on Eurostar from the beautifully restored and rebuilt St Pancras station, went like a dream. Even the weather was as perfect as could be for late November!
Thanks to helpful advice received before we left from VT members koen and gaminari we hopped on the correct tram in Gent and got off at the right stop .
But finding the Hotel was not so straightforward because since we booked, it had changed hands and was displaying No Name At All!
Friendly locals came to the rescue and sent us back to the Hotel-with-no-Name we had already walked past!

Can you spot one of the iconic pictures of Gent - the bicycle - visible even in this night-time scene ?
The Belmont on a beautiful November Day

Belfort Tower - the City Landmark

There are few places within the old city from which it is not possible to see the tip of the Belfort Tower (belfry).
Built in 1380 it is almost 300ft. (91m.) high and on top of the spire you can see a flying, guilded, copper dragon.

Cafe Society in November

On a cold but bright, sunny late November afternoon pavement cafes were still busy all day long. This is the Botermarkt near Cafe Leffe opposite the Stadhuis.

Stayed a few days in Ghent (as we spell it!) in 1991- I can't imagine it's changed much. Would like to make a repeat visit one day! Marion x.
