Cadiz - an ancient city surrounded by the sea

by ranger49 - last update: Feb 26, 2008

Cadiz in winter

Cadiz in situated at the rounded end of a narrow Peninsula and is surrounded by the sea. The main part of the old city is very easy to get around on foot and it is so compact it would be difficult to get lost. However If you have a street amp it is a good idea to carry one with you - if only to check out which amazing building you are passing!
Look out for the architectural details - fine doors and stonework window frames in particular.
Streets are typically very narrow - looking down one it looks as though, in some, it would be possible to shake hands across the road with a neighbour in the opposite window. As you walk around you may have to look hard for the small shops which seem to blend in with the dwelling houses. In others smart, well lit boutiques can be found.

Cruise ships dock at Puerto Commercial and the modern shopping area is only a ten-minute walk from the port’s entrance. As we have only been there in February and March there were few visitors in town but I imagine it gets pretty busy in the summer months.

Walkabout.

The old narrow streets give way to open squares bordered by impressive buildings churches, museums, theatres and civic buildings.

And you are never far away from a cafe-bar or small restaurant.
Take the turn at the next corner or go down the gap between the buildings in this photo and you will be off down another alley.

I always just walking around places we visit and exploring Cadiz with its many contrasts was a real pleasure.

Carnival Time

Carnival takes place just before the beginning of Lent and preparations were in hand for it when we were there on one occasion in February. The lights were already up in some streets.
The Museum of Cadiz was closed on the day we had planned to visit (Monday)

Thanks for the tips on Cadiz, especially since I hope to be visiting in December! Hopefully those winds won't be quite so cold while I explore the old city!

Yes we had a really cold February this year, far too cold for swimming. Most locals don't jump in til around June anyway though Northern European's tend to be able to brave it a little earlier on if the weather if nice ;)
