We do not care for large resorts and the popular image of Tenerife as a cheap all-day drinkers paradise with time-share touts around every corner meant we never really included the possibility of a trip to the island in our in our travel plans. Then my daughter, who had similar views, pointed out a small ad. she had come across in a professional journal. It described a self catering property in what sounded like a garden and nature lover's paradise. Situated at 1200metres above sea level in a protected area of natural beauty bordering the Parque National del Teide. We had to go! Our plane was delayed by several hours and when we arrived all on board went to form a queue at the same car rental desk. Nearly two hours later we left the airport and, following the directions supplied by the owner of our apartment, sped away. We soon left the lights behind us and not long afterwards the metal road became something more like a dirt track. The headlights just picked out the steep descent on either side..... Eventually we arrived at the turning to the house but our under powered little car needed several false starts before it could be coaxed up the steep track -deeply rutted after a week of heavy rain.
A most welcome Welcome Pack of goodies provided an adequate supper -and so to bed. |
| | In the early morning light we were able to appreciate the beautiful location of our very comfortable apartment. From the terrace we had a distant view of the busy, busy coast down below - until the clouds created a mystical barrier between us. So up above the clouds we had breakfast under the banana tree next to the small pond where birds gobbled their breakfasts. |
The sun shone above the cloud line so we enjoyed our first lazy morning studying the masses of information about the island thoughtfully provided by our hosts. And decided where to go for lunch.
We spent the next too weeks exploring the island demolishing all our pre-judged stereotypical views of Tenerife.
It is a unique island with natural beauty, history and culture. We came away knowing we had only touched the surface of all there is to see and do there. | | |
