Two little villages - now a place of remembrance

Ranville and Benouville seem to run into each other but are dissected by roads and the riverl'Orne.
It is perhaps only due to an accident of war that they are now synonymous with Pegasus Bridge - so called after the emblem of the 6th British Airborne Division, and in honour of the men who were the first to arrive on French soil to begin the Liberation of France on the night of June 5/th 1944.

A river flows through -

and the traffic stops to allow shipping to pass,

And life goes on for these two small towns that play host all year through to the thousands of people who come to learn more about the brave exploits and military planning that went into the first step towards liberation.

Private Bill Millin, the Scottish Piper sounds like a real hero. The Pegasus Memorial Museum sounds like my kind of place. Excellent page Barbara!

An excellent account of your impressions of Bénouville and it's place in the history of WW2 ! One of my son's in law parachuted into France as part of Canada's 50th anniversary squad and another was there as a Mountie for the 60th!

We visited several years ago, unfortunately in winter when the museum was closed. The visit was a very special interest and we were delighted that the new bridge design reflects the style of the old one.

Good that they have preserved the old bridge as an historical exhibit in the Pegasus Memorial Museum.
