Guilliers - found almost by chance.

by ranger49 - last update: Jan 21, 2008

A lunchtime stop.

Guilliers Church with Hotel on right.
We were driving from Pont Aven to Cancale for an overnight stop before catching an early morning ferry to Portsmouth. We had all day for the journey and decided to make a day of keeping to the back roads. They were deserted, villages few and far between, and hamlets were neat and tidy in spite of the absence of any signs of people.
I was navigating and as it got near to lunchtime we really did seem to be in the middle of nowhere. We were both getting a bit peckish - it didn’t even look hopeful that we would find a small shop to buy picnic provisions .

Then I looked more closely at the map and saw a slightly larger dot, recognised a church and a square and was convinced we would at least find a shop if not an auberge......

A left and a right turn and there we were in Guilliers - just in time to see a small market in Place de l’Eglise packing up in front of a very attractive, large hotel with a Logis de France sign.

Guilliers has only 1300 inhabitants . And is mostly ignored by the writers of Guide books. We discovered it is a charming place to break your journey, stretch your legs with a walk around Place de l’Eglise and the large Church of St Peter and St Paul and War Memorial before enjoying an excellent lunch in the restaurant of the Logis immediately opposite the church..

We parked the car outside the side of the hotel - just out of sight, bottom right of the picture. When we came out from the restaurant thedrizzle had stopped, the sun was shining -and the car refused to start.

By the time my husband diagnosed the problem and fitted a new fuse the square was empty and silent - all sign of the market had gone and the streets had been swpet clean ; diners from the restaurant had driven away so we got this very typical view of a deserted French village.

I like the sound of the rasberries and cream, but I'm not so sure about rabbit casserole...
