Bishop. Even the name sounds of royalty. Hidden on a long stretch of Highway 395 on the Eastern side of the Sierras, Bishop is a recreational wonderland. Though I only spent two and a half days in Bishop, I ventured out on two hikes and wandered around the part-tourist/part-cowboy town. It’s a secret spot that few Bay Area folks have yet to discover just a 90 minute drive outside of Tuolumne Meadows in Yosemite and south of Mammoth Lakes and Mono Lake.
This small town of 4000 explodes on Memorial Day weekend to accommodate up to 30,000 people for the yearly Mule Days celebration. Yes, mules. Though I profess to consider mules quite adorable on their own right, most people consider them odd but useful creatures. The idea of celebrating their existence surprises even me. However, this small town professes to be the home to celebrating these noise making creatures and goes all out to have a rodeo (with mules) and other similar contests. Though unique in their approach, Mule Days is worth the trip and the experience.
If you’re unable to go for Memorial Day, Bishop appears to have late spring to mid-fall outdoors activities before they get snowed in. Mammoth Mountain (a 45 minute drive north) is supposedly the largest ski resort in California. Many of the passes close in the winter so it’s significantly more challenging to get in and out of this winter wonderland. I also believe the have a rodeo (for horses) on Labor Day weekend.
Without a doubt, Bishop is a hidden wonderland worth the trip. I personally enjoy the drive down the 395 from Lake Tahoe as its simple beauty captivates my imagination. The Mountain Light photo gallery is internationally renowned and even the little sandwich shop owned by a cranky German guy seems to captivate the small town atmosphere. After spending the day hiking, stop by the au-natural Keough Hot Springs to relax.
