My Neuschwanstein Castle Page

by Jplummer - last update: Oct 2, 2004

Neuschwanstein Castle is extremely beautiful. It is a great place for all ages. Walt Disney bases its logo on this particular Castle. There are many things to do, shop and eat. Horse carriage rides, look on the Castle from either the bridge or the look out point, visit the Courtyard and even take a tour. There are many, many restaurants and places to shop. Most specialty shops are very pricey, yet very nice and beautiful items. Take a moment and gaze at the beauty of the Castle and of its surroundings. Just 15 minutes away are the Austrian Alps. Hills full of green and mountains surround the Castle. Driving on a cloudy day, you can find yourself driving above the clouds! People of all ages will love this Castle. You can spend an entire day here, gazing at the beauty and shopping at the local shops. Have fun and enjoy!

Some History

The Castle was completed in 1891 by King Ludwig II, yet moved in in 1884. The construction started in 1880 and was completed after King Ludwig’s death. The surrounding of the Castle is no accident. King Ludwig wanted the surrounding to be beautiful, “The location is one of the most beautiful to be found, holy and unapproachable, a worthy temple for the divine friend who has brought salvation and true blessing to the world. When he moved in, he increasingly withdrew from human contact and focused even more on his royal dignity, Ludwig II changed the building program. The guest rooms were replaced in the plans by a "Moorish Hall" with a fountain, but this was never actually built. The "Writing Room" was changed from 1880 into a small grotto. The modest "Audience Room" became a huge Throne Room. This was no longer intended for giving audiences, but was built as a monument to kingship and a copy of the legendary Grail hall.
Seven weeks after the death of King Ludwig II in 1886, Neuschwanstein was opened to the public. Today, Neuschwanstein is one of the most popular of all the palaces and castles in Europe. Every year, 1.13 million people visit “the castle of the fairy-tale king”. In the summer around 6,000 visitors a day stream through rooms that were intended for a single inhabitant.

Prices, Times & Things to do

The Castle hours as it follows: April - September: 9 am - 6 pm
Cash desk open from 8 am - 5 pm
October -March: 10 am - 4 pm
Cash desk open from 9 am - 3 pm
When going to the Castle, you have to drive to the parking lot at the base of the hill first. From there, you have to purchase a bus ticket and if you wish a Guided tour. For both the tour and bus, it is between 15 and 19 euros. When taking the bus, you can wait longer than 30 minutes just to get on. When on top of the hill, you have 2 options. You can either visit the bridge and look-out point or visit the Castle first. Going right takes you to the bridge and going left takes you to the Castle. Be careful on the bridge, there are many people there at the same time, and it may become slippery on misty day. Further up, you can hike to the look- out point. Be extremely careful though. There is no guard rail or fence. Hold on to small children and watch your footing. Someone has already fallen, and it is a sheer drop over the cliff. At the Castle, you can visit the Courtyard for free. There you can see the bridge and the waterfall. From there you can go on the guided tour. The Castle and its surrounding is very beautiful and breath taking. Make the most out of your day!
