A Place for History

by Jplummer - last update: Nov 2, 2004

That's what I have to say about this place. You read about the concentration camps in books, learn it in History class and even see the movies. But nothing is compared to being at the camps, seeing what people had to go through, the pain and torture. We went there, thinking that we would spend half a day there and half the day in Munich. We were wrong, we spent the entire day there, leaving when it closed knowing that we didn't see everything. This was the most emotional place I have ever been to. I definatly learned a lot, and saw things that I will never forget.

Prices

Going to Dachau is relatively cheap. There is no entry charge and parking is about 2 euros. The Audio Guide is a MUST. It is 3 euro per person and you have to give up at least one ID card. With the Audio Guide, you also get a map for the entire camp. The museum is free and there is a film that is also free. There are guided tours, one for 1/2 hour and another for 2 1/2 hours. Normally get together around 11am or noon. There are signs everywhere pointing to where the camp is. It is closed on Mondays. Tuesdays thru Sundays 9am-5pm. A visit consists of the museum, the bunker behind the mesuem, the restored barracks, and a walk across the huge but now empty camp to the shrines and crematorium at the far end.

A little History

The phrase "Never Again" is everywhere. Dachau was the first Nazi Concentration Camp built in 1933 and was a model for all other camps to follow. This was a work camp, where inmates were used for slave labor. It was also a departure point for shipments of people destined for gas chambers in the east. Other than that, I don't want to give anything else away. Everything is in English and is easy to follow. History is given through the Audio Guides, the museum, and just through seeing everything.
