this hotel is in Shatti Al Qurum, right next to all the other fancy ones like Hyatt and just accross the street from the Intercon.
I haven't personally been in it, but was told that their published rates can be bargained down - someone (check this website http://www.nature-photography.co.uk/The%20Oman.htm) got it for RO 7 (US$18) per nite.
Give it a shot
Unique Qualities: Large clean rooms, access to the beach and coffee shops near the beach
Comparison: less expensive than average

Price: less than US$20

crowne plaza muscat
Popular business hotel, it's kind of dark and gloomy, but has the best Iranian Restaurant in Muscat and is in Quroum (Center of the city)
Definitley not a site for soar eyes, extremely ugly building, but the sea view compensates. Ask for a sea view room.
I give it 3/5. If you want a budget 5 star hotel, better go to the Intercon in Shatti Qurum
Unique Qualities: Outdoor pool
(OK)italian restaurant
(BEST) Iranian Restaurant - albeit gloomy ambeince
Gift shop (too expensive)
ATM
Helpful friendly staff
Great view of sea
Address: P.O. Box 1455, , Muscat 112
Comparison: about average
Price: US$80-120

Al Bustan Palace Hotel
This is a nice hotel, but it's too far away from the rest of Muscat (even though it's closer to Mutrah). You'll find more activity if you are staying at one of the hotels in Shatti Quroum or in Qurum (center of Muscat)
But anyway you'll need a car if your staying in Muscat, and it's about 15 minute drive from center of town.
You might find this too expensive/far away to stay in, but you'll definitley want to go there for tea and scones and a small walk around the garden and pool.
Unique Qualities: This hotel is situated in a lovely location, very close to 'Older' muscat and Mutrah
It's a 5 star hotel, that was built in the 80's to cater for the Arabian gulf leaders who were visiting Muscat on a summit (ie. fit for kings)
It's cheaper than the Hyatt, but still one of the 3 more expensive hotels Muscat.
Good chinese restaurant, french restaurant, outdoor pool, private beach, Spa, coffee shop
It accepts intercon Priority Club card holders promotions.
Address: P.O. Box 1998, , Muscat -----
Comparison: most expensive
Price: US$120-180

Grand Hyatt Pool area
An upper class, 5 star hotel- the largest in Muscat.
It is decorated in a richly Arabic way (it can be a bit much), and has a very unique swimming pool with a lazy river. It's smack right next to the Arabian Gulf (1 minute walk from the swimming pool)
The food is good, but not the type yummiest I've tried. Have dinner at the Italian Tuscany just cuz their complimentary ciappatta bread and virgin olive oil is yummy.
Unique Qualities: Nice pool, every spot has some kind of decorative arabian sense, good club sandwitches!
If it's too expensive to stay in, pass by for an afternoon tea and a small tour around the lobby and pool area.
Address: Shatti Al Qurum
Comparison: most expensive

chedi pool seaside
Depending on your mood, you'll either love the Chedi or find it extremely boring.
It's built in an East Asian style, very feng shui'sh
Nice rooms and Villa's, Amazing Pool area. Good for Friday brunch even if you're not staying there.
In a jist, it's too expensive to stay in (+/- RO 65 per nite, standard), but go for a Friday brunch, or some dessert' in the evening (the place looks nicer in the evening)
Unique Qualities: Fab Pool
Excellent part of the pool immediately by the Ocean
Spa
Library
Cute shop (but you'll find almost everything elsewhere in Muscat cheaper)
International Cuisine restaurant (I find the desserts better than the main dishes)
Cons: Can you believe, 5 star hote>>No Cappacinno? Terrible Coffee.
Comparison: most expensive
