One of my favourite places in London. Lots of things to see and do here and very quiet and relaxing. I loved the beautiful trees and walking around the many paths and tracks was a real pleasure. Of course on a sunny day you have to share it with thousands but the place is so big finding a quiet place is not that difficult. Plenty of signs to show the way to various places of interest and cafes here and there for a fuel stop. You'll need it if you want to walk through all of it! The park is massive.

Hyde Park: Hyde Park...Rotten Row

Rotten Row was a special attraction for me. I had read many horsey books as a child and had really wanted to see it for my self. It was originally part of King William 111's carriage drive from Whitehall to Kensington Palace. It was the first lamplit road in the country and designated as a public bridleway in the 1730's. I especially got up early one morning hoping to catch some horses out and about. I wasn't disapointed and the horses and riders were so well turned out.

I know feeding squirrels may not seem to most as a good activity tip but this is for the benefit of my Aussie readers. Cause we don't have these little blokes back home and they are cute. While I was in the park I came across some other Australians feeding them and they were enjoying it just as much as myself. It can be likened to visitors coming across possums in Australia. The trick is to take along a bag of peanuts and scrunch the packet as you walk along. The squirrels are familiar with the sound and know food is in the offering. Some are tame enough to eat out of your hand and I spent some time enjoying their company.

Trafalgar Square was my first stop and it really was impressive. That is if you ignore the hundreds of people flocking around. I especially loved the four lion statues but was really frustrated at the many people who kept climbing on them to have their picture taken. It really spoilt it for those who just wanted a picture of one of just the lion. It was a very busy place with not as many pigeons as I'd thought there would be.

The Palace and the Orangery restaurant were both closed when I arrived so I didn't get to go in. I had a walk around the gardens though but didn't stay long. They were nice enough and I should have went back to see more.

This place was a hive of activity and colour. I just loved it. The whole street is lined with stalls selling anything from fruit to feathers. Arcades along the road lead you through labyringths of antique stalls. A bit stuffy inside and quite hot if you stay too long but full of interesting stuff. Antique jewellry, books, china, dolls...anything and everything.

The street is just so exciting and there is always something fun to see. Even if you don't buy anything just looking around will keep you busy for half a day. My first purchase was a punnet of georgous strawberries from this stall. Barry the stall owner was quite a character!

We arrived in London during a transit strike and used a tour bus to get to our hotel. Worth it!! |
