Roosevelt Island recently slipped into our cultural consciousness. Spiderman was filmed here. The river flows smoothly into NYC harbor, perfect for swimming.

Roosevelt Island is tiny. Once you reach the northern end of the Island you will see Queens county on the right, Randalls Island to the north, and Manhattan to the left. And in the middle of it all the gentle waters of the East River, not a true river by the way but an estuary.

VinTolucci commented that Roosevelt Island was situated on the Hudson River. This is incorrect. Roosevelt is on the east side of Manhattan and is on the East River.
