Wonderful (and barely) off the beaten track

A perfect place to *really* wind down

My wife and I have visited Tulum twice so far, and we are hooked. The beaches are beautiful, the people are friendly, and there are few obnoxious Americans (yes, we are Americans) screaming at and/or ignorning their misbehaved children & chattering into their cell phones.

Our favorite two things about Tulum are the relative lack of things to do, and the wonderful mix of natationalities:

You can certainly generate activity for yourself if you wish (diving, visiting ruins, etc.) but this is the perfect "chill out" place: Some cell phones may work, but coverge is very, very spotty. During our first visit, our tri-band GSM and CDMA phones didn't get a signal 95% of the time...we didn't bother bringing them on the second trip.

Many (most) properties have limited electricity, so you'll quickly find yourself getting in sync with the rising and setting of the sun -- We pretty much went to bed when we got home from dinner, and woke up when the sun came up.

In between, we sat on various beaches, read, and watched the people.

Visitors to Tulum are a great mix of Europeans and laid-back Americans -- I'd guess a 70%/30% mix. Expect to meet and talk with all different sorts of people while you are out at night.

Last week both my table and our neighbor's were accused of being $20 USD short in our payment - 5 minutes after it was picked up - a waiters' scam. I still love the owners, but the ensuing argument destroyed the evening and I'll never go back there.
