Things To Do: Take Time to Smell the Air

  • Late afternoon, early evening--Right after a day at the pool, drop off your stuff in the room and go back down to the hammocks, if you are staying at Hyatt Regency Hotel in Kauai. If you aren't , that's okay find a quiet romantic location, like maybe hanging out on your balcony or in the chaise lounge chairs of your pool, whatever.

You can enjoy a relaxing moment taking in the day's activities while your swinging on the hammock or enjoying the view.

Take time to smell the ocean air! Don't rush moments like this, this is what you will remember when you get back home.

  • Rent a car, take a tour, but you must travel down the Waimea Canyon Drive to Waimea Canyon State Park and Kokee State Park. This is a beautiful scenic drive with many stops and lookout points. You can also take a picnic lunch and stop for abit.

Bring plenty of film and gear up that digital camera.

  • After reading all the information on the helicopter tours, we felt that Jack Harter Helicopters was the best. We were re-assured by the hotel concierge, so we booked it.

It was an excellent choice! We had a morning expedition planned, 9:45am, which allows time for breakfast and getting to their location, Lihue Airport. Don't be late! By the way, we signed up for a 60 min. trip, they also have 90 min. The pilot was great, he narrates the entire trip. We were paired with another Honeymoon couple and really enjoyed this tour of the island. If you aren't nervous, this is a definate must!

Jack Harter's itinerary included flying over:

    The North Shore
    Manawaiopuna Falls
    Waimea Canyon
    Waialeale
    Na Pali Coast Line

  • Smiles Everyone! Remember this from 'Fantasy Island'..well these falls are pictured in the opening scene.

It is a fantastic sight, should not be missed! It has been photographed in so many ways but it does not do it justice. The 80 foot tall falls are certainly a sight to see!

  • Its just something you have to see for yourself, its these geyser like displays that come from the ocean. Its located in a popular south shore location.

Its almost strange to be standing there waiting with a zillion people looking at the rocks and ocean to see when it will spout out a water projectile. Then everyone scrambles to take a picture, it may take a few tries but you'll get it. :)

My own pictures of the spouting horn will be in my travelogue.

  • This Hawaiian adventure begins with choosing a tour company. You'll find many choices, we chose Waialeale Boat Tours, Inc. It was one of the smaller, older boats cruising to the Grotto and also less crowded. We wanted to have plenty of space and enjoy our trip not spend time jockeying for a position on the boat.

This little adventure takes you up the Wailua River where you'll meet a lava rock grotto covered with tropical ferns. Along the way, you will be serenaded, with Hawaiin music and authentic Hula. We received historical facts and legends along the way as well.

The trip along the Wailua River takes 40 minutes to the grotto. Once you arrive, you are led through tropical gasslands, you will also notice beautiful and friendly birds and peacocks. (See my travelogues) Lots of photo ops along the way to the Grotto, however, stay with your tour group, you wouldn't want to get lost here!

At the Grotto, you will again be serenaded by Hawaiian musicians playing traditional local songs. The singing is fantastic and it really gives you goose bumps as you are sitting in the amphitheatre, overlooking the Fern Grotto. It is truly a nice adventure.

I would recommend Waialeale Boat Tours, Inc. (red boat) Tours are exactly 1 1/2 hours long. They leave every half hour, starting at 9:00am to 3:30pm.

    Rates:
    $15.00 adults
    $7.50 children
    $14.00 seniors

Tip: Leave enough time for this activity - allow for alittle more time that 1 1/2 because once they load up the boats and then leave and then get to the grotto, each tour boat waits its turn at the dock before unloading, as a courtesy. It doesn't add too much time maybe 15 minutes or so. Then your little show, some pictures and back on the boat for another 40 minutes of Hawaiian melodies and beautiful scenery!!

  • Another set of fabulous falls along Wailua River. Its not accessible by river or trail. Great view of the falls from the Opaeka'a Falls Lookout off Kuamo'o Road.

    Directions: DIRECTIONS:
Take Highway 56 north from Lihu'e toward Wailua. After crossing the Wailua Bridge, turn left on Kuamo'o Road at Mile Marker #6. Follow the road approximately 1 1/2 miles to the 'Opaeka'a Falls Lookout.

Hi, you have great pictures of Hawaii! We had our honeymoon 1 year earlier. We had 1 week across CA, 1 week across the Hawaii islands and 1 week waikiki beach. You refreshed my memories :-) We visited the same places... Regards from Lower Saxony, Michael
