I stayed at the Winston upon recommendation of some locals who advised of it's proximity to Amsterdam's nightlife.
Indeed, it was one block from the Red Light District. You could walk out the lobby and within one block find yourself amidst the seductive doorways of the Red Light District, in three minutes you found yourself in Dam Square, and in 7 in Centraal Station. Winston Hotel is good for a tourist who is not traveling on business and doesn't mind simple, raw accomodations.
I use the word "raw" for a reason. As in raw materials. Rooms don't come equipped with private phones, so you have to use the pay phone in the lobby which is 2 euros for a 5 minute call to a local cell phone. Nor do rooms come automatically with a remote for the TV's, but with 20 euro deposit, they will give you a remote. If you don't have an adapter for the electric outlets, a 10 euro deposit will fetch you one.
Beyond these limitations however, the stay was enjoyable. The staff was ALWAYS friendly and willing to help with navigating the streets of Amsterdam as well as assist in answering any other questions. I can't say one bad thing about the service I received in the 7 nights I was there.
I know others may disagree, but my room was clean and served me well for my purpose in Amsterdam. I wasn't there to spend time in the hotel like I would in a beach resort in Mexico, I was there to spend time exploring the canals, the cobblestone streets, and sidewalk cafes of Amsterdam.
Winston also includes a breakfast from 8-10 am sharp every morning. Don't show up 10 minutes after 10 though, I said "sharp" and they don't hesistate to close the doors to the buffet right at 10. Corn flakes, rolls, individually wrapped liverwurst, various jellies, butter, cheeses, salami's, coffee, orange juice, and brown hard boiled eggs were served every morning--all you can eat too.
I'd say the primary clientelle was between 20-30 years old, but there were plenty of older 50's and 40's spotted too.

Unique Qualities: Damrak is to Amsterdam what Broaway is to Times Square. This hotel is one block from Damrak and one block from the Red Light District but still SAFE for the solitary traveler.
