"Island Connections" Hikingdiver's Profile

Getting Started-

Traveler, hiker, Scuba diver and sea lover... That's me.

After traveling for a number of years across Europe I decided to launch a online working group called Island Connections. The aim of this group is to bring together people who live on, visit or appreciate islands. All those who value immense natural capital of islands may want to give this group a thought or two.

The group is involved in workshops, hiking tours, boat excursions, camping trips and photography expeditions.

Malta

The Maltese Islands are a group of small, low-lying islands situated in the centre of the Mediterranean. The archipelago is made up of three inhabited islands and a number of uninhabited islets.

Mainland Malta is the largest island, (245.70km²), while Comino is the smallest inhabited island (2.80km²). Gozo is also inhabited and has an area of about 67.10km².

Apart from these three main islands there are about seven other islets, the largest being St. Paul's Islands and Cominotto. The total coastline is approximately 190km long.

Man first settled on the Maltese Islands some 7000 years ago. Today the Republic of Malta is one of the smallest states in Europe with a population of about 405,000 inhabitants over a total territorial area of 316km².

Comino-

With a surface area of just over 2.8km2 and a maximum altitude of 75m, Comino is a stepping stone between the two main sister islands of Malta and Gozo. The magnificent Blue Lagoon separates Comino form the smaller islet of Cominotto. Comino lies 1.6km to the NW of mainland Malta and just 626m to the south of Gozo. The South and North Comino channels separate Comino from Malta and Gozo respectively.

With a total coastline of 14.50km Comino and Cominotto offer the hiker a multitude of coastal features including bays and coves, caves and caverns, cliffs and boulder screes.
These two islands bear some of the most scenic and morphologically diverse landscapes and seascapes found around the Maltese archipelego.

They also support a variety or flora and fauna that add colour and life to the stunning views and scenes visible across these islands. With only four permanent residents, these islands are a true winter paradise for the outdoors lover.
