Sibiu, or Hermannstadt as it was known, was the grandest of the seven walled cities built by Saxon settlers in Transylvania during the twelfth century. The others were: Brașov (Kronstadt), Bistrita (Bistritz), Cluj (Klausenburg), Medias (Mediasch), Sebes (Mühlbach) and Sighișoara (Schässburg). The big question most visitors planning a trip around Romania ask is, "Out of Brașov, Sighișoara and Sibiu, which is the best?" The guide books seem to favour Brașov and Sighișoara, but nearly everyone I have ever asked this question, be they Romanian or foreign, has unhesitatingly answered, "Sibiu". And I would agree: Sibiu is simply the best of them all. |
Sibiu has always been the cultural centre of Transylvania. During the nineteenth century Franz Liszt, Johan Strauss, Johannes Brahms, and Richard Strauss all played here. The city was chosen to be the 2007 European Capital of Culture. | | |
