Chester, on the banks of the River Dee, is the best-preserved walled, Roman city in Britain. In 75-79 AD during the reign of Emperor Titus, the Roman Second Legion, under Governor Agricola, built an earth and timber fortress here. They called the fortress Deva, meaning "Goddess". Stone walls were added in 96-100 AD, and there are still sections of the original Roman wall visible today. It became one of the greatest cities in Roman Britain, with the biggest amphitheatre in the country. This, too, can still be seen today.

Chester looks like the kind of place I'd love to lose myself in for a couple days :o) "The Water of Life" is one of the most beautiful sculptures I've ever seen, so incredibly moving! Sorry for that bad Italian meal, though ;o)
Lovely city...great tips and pics. Very interesting to read about the Roman influence. Cheers...and that restaurant sounds just awful...
Chester looks like a beautiful city. The fountain and the clock are both gorgeous!
Cool city.
