General Tips: Narrow streets of the Medina
  • Tip Rating:
  • Favorite Thing: The streets of the Medina are made deliberately narrow, with very high walls, to protect walkers from the hot sun. they are fascinating places to wander around and you can take some great photos in them, but be wary, if any individual thinks he has just featured in your photo, he will ask you for money.

Although these streets are usually too narrow for cars, they do not deter speeding motorcyclists, so you need to take care.

    General Tips: Storks' nests
  • Tip Rating:
  • Favorite Thing: Storks' nests abound in the Medina, with the highest concentration on the walls of El Badi Palace. I have never seen so many storks in any other city in the world and they are magnificent birds that build huge nests.

    General Tips: Decorated ceilings
  • Tip Rating:
  • Favorite Thing: Marrakech has had some of the finest interior decorators in the world for centuries. It is a city full of beautiful rooms. Whenever you are in a room, it is always worth looking up at the ceiling. Many of them have fine decorations. Some of the best are in Bahia Palace and Marrakesh Museum.

    General Tips: Arches
  • Tip Rating:
  • Favorite Thing: In most of the world doorways are plain and rectangular. Not in Marrakech. Here entrances are works of art and nearly always archways.

    General Tips: Olives
  • Tip Rating:
  • Favorite Thing: The countryside around Marrakech is full of olive groves, and the olives on sale in the city are some of the most delicious in the world. The black olives are the best.

    General Tips: Cats
  • Tip Rating:
  • Favorite Thing: Feral cats seem to be everywhere in Marrakesh, but in spite of what some guide books say about Moroccans' contempt for animals, they mostly seem to be well-fed and healthy. The kitten in these photos was full of life and so well-fed that it was more interested in tree climbing than my breakfast.

Excellent tips and photos, Ian! I enjoyed a week in this great city in February. I loved the foodstalls on Djemaa el-Fna but, as you say, the atmosphere is certainly better than the food.
