Damascus Transportation

Transportation: Yellow Taxis

Getting TO/AROUND: Damascus' yellow taxis are cheap and plentiful. A green light on the roof means they are available, while a red light means they are occupied. They all have a meter and usually remember to put it on at the start of your journey. If not, just remind them and they will readily oblige, unlike the taxi drivers in Marrakesh for example. Sometimes, if you arrive at one of the big bus stations, a tout will try to take you to a waiting taxi. In that case, the taxi driver will not be using his meter, which is illegal. To avoid this problem, just walk one or two hundred metres down the road from the bus station and flag a passing taxi down.

Taxi journeys in the city will typically only cost you S£25 to S£50, which is great value. But, a lot of the drivers only speak Arabic and some of them smoke.

    Transportation: Buses to Beirut
  • Tip Rating: [Not enough ratings yet]
  • 'Mode': TO
    Category: Bus
Getting TO/AROUND: Buses for Beirut depart from the Baramkeh bus station, which is on Palestine Street. Ask for Garaj Baramkeh. When you reach the bus station, which is on a busy road, walk through the entrance gate and the ticket office is in the small building immediately to your left. The women selling the tickets speak very little English, but they are used to dealing with foreign travellers. There is a small, basic cafeteria to wait in, but there are better options outside the bus station on the other side of the road, where there is a range of cheap local fast food outlets. They serve water on the bus, but I would advise taking your own bottle. The Syrian/Lebanese border formalities are fairly straightforward, but someone from the bus will probably guide you through anyway.

I took a Karnak bus, which left Damascus at 3.30 pm and arrived in Beirut at 7.30pm. It cost S£175 and it was fine. There are buses at 7.30am, 8.30am, 9.30am, 12, 2.30pm, 3.30pm and 4.30pm.
