Tripoli is Lebanon's second biggest city. Its population is almost entirely Sunni Muslim. It is famous as the Arab sweet capital of the Middle East.

It was, along with Sidon and Tyre, one of the three great Phoenician ports. The Crusaders, who held the city for 180 years, built a massive citadel here in 1103.

In May 2007 the bloodiest factional fighting in Lebanon since the Civil War ended in 1990 erupted here between Fatah al-Islam and the Lebanese Army.

Much preferred Tripoli to Byblos - the souks and old city were wonderful. Loved the displays of salads using the green, red and white of the Lebanese flag too. I wonder what changes the last few years have brought.

What a wonderful page about Tripoli! That introductory photo is fantastic. The hotel run by the older man was a joy to read. Thanks for an education about Tripoli.
