Tehran has only been the capital of Iran since 1789. At that time it was a sleepy town with only 15,000 people. Now it is the biggest, most dynamic city in the country, with a population of nearly 14 million.
In the background is the snowcapped Alborz mountain range, the view of which is slightly obscured by the light pall of smog which hangs over the city. |
| More new buildings and cars |
| | And it's getting bigger! Tehran is rapidly becoming one of the biggest cities in the world. It seems to grow before your very eyes, with construction work taking place almost constantly and more and more people and cars pouring into the streets.
Wherever you are in Tehran, the sound of pneumatic drills and car horns won't be too far away. |
City of extremes Tehran is a city of extremes. It has cold winters, with sub-zero temperatures and hot summers, with temperatures up to over 40 degrees Celsius. Tehran actually means "warm slope". Spring and autumn are the best times to visit, unless you want to ski on the slopes of the Alborz mountains in the winter months. | | |

Thanks for sharing Ian. | gubbi1 Sun Mar 25, 2007 13:56 UTC They have great pistachios. We were eating them in Sweden until my fingers started to blead from pealing... |
