Ceremonies & Holidays: Changing of the Royal Guard
  • Tip Rating:
  • From March 9 until December 31, the Changing of the Royal Guard takes place three times daily in front of Deoksugung (Deoksu Palace), just opposite City Hall. The ceremony is at 10.30, 14.00 and 15.00 every day, except Monday. A similar ceremony takes place in front of Chandeokgung. Check the times, as they are subject to change.

This is a colourful ceremony, with traditional costumes, weapons and instruments, including conch shells.

There is an English commentary explaining the details of the ceremony.

Customs & Oddities: Koreans are never bored with board games
  • Tip Rating:
  • Koreans, especially older people, love board games. There is even one TV channel devoted to possibly the most complicated board game in the world: Go, known in Korean as Paduk.

Yunoni, the game shown in the picture, is simpler and played by all Koreans, especially during the New Year holiday. It involves throwing four sticks down to determine how many squares you can move your piece around the perimeter of the board. It's a bit like a cross between Snakes and Ladders and Backgammon.

Local Customs: The Fan Dance 2
  • Tip Rating:
  • This is not to be confused with the Western fan dance. As you can see, the performers remain fully-clothed in Hanbok (traditional Korean costume).

    Local Customs: Korean musical instruments
  • Tip Rating:
  • Korea has its own traditional musical instruments. These include the Piri (flute) shown in the picture, the Jing (gong), Taeyeongso (horn) and some unique stringed instruments: the Gayageum, the Geomungo and the Ajaeng.

Performances of traditional Korean music can be seen, along with the dancing, at Pulhyanggi Restaurant, Seoul Tower.

    Religion: Jangseung
  • Tip Rating:
  • Jangseung are wooden totem poles or spirit sentinels that were placed at the entrance to villages to guard against evil spirits, natural disasters and military invasions. You can see them in the grounds of the National Folk Museum in Seoul. Shamanism is still actively practised in Seoul.
