"Tennessee, The Volunteer State" Tennessee by Elena_007
Tennessee Travel Guide: 4,170 reviews and 6,530 photos
Tennessee is known as the Volunteer State because of the record number of volunteers from Tennessee during the War of 1812 and also the Mexican War. It was also a nickname given to honor the bravery of those soldiers from Tennessee who served under General Andrew Jackson in the Battle of New Orleans, which resulted in a victory for the US in the War of 1812.
In October of 2004, The USAir Force announced plans to confiscate our beloved national treasure and relocate her to the Air Force Museum in Dayton, Ohio. We are still in negotiations at this point, thanks to thousands of e-mails from ordinary citizens to those in authority to try to reverse this decision. I am just one of the volunteers at the Memphis Belle Memorial Association, working in the gift shop and accompanying the guided tours.
She has been in her namesake city for 58 years, after being rescued by Tennessee volunteers from Memphis. We have secured the site to build a museum in Memphis in her honor. It is located at Forest Hill Irene and the 385.
There are plans in the works for a museum dedicated in her honor, and depending on the USAir Force's decision on relocating or granting us permanent permission to display the Memphis Belle at home, this dream may not ever be a reality for Memphis, Tennesee.
Please visit her official website to find out how you can voice your opinion on where the Memphis Belle shall spend the rest of her days. You can help us win this fight to keep her at home, where she truly belongs.
