| Bridge of Sighs, (Punting on the Cam) |
Cambridge is a city full of college life, and cyclists. I think there may be more bicycles than vehicles. There is lots of shopping in Cambridge, with the main streets full of different shops, for a variety of tastes from ordinary to extravagant.
If you do nothing else whilst in Cambridge, Punting on the cam is a MUST. Beautiful views, with swans and ducks swimming beside you, (trying to stay out of the way). I will treasure this memory for a lifetime. :-) Definitely, an enjoyable experience that is unforgettable.
The colleges are huge, and could easily be mistaken for a palace by a tourist, such as myself, if not for the knowledgeable "expert punter" tour guide. I saw many "attempt" to punt, and fail miserably, but they still seemed as though they were enjoying themselves, none the less.
St. John's College was founded in 1511 by Lady Margaret Beaufort, and is one of the most famous, simply because of the bridge that leads from the college over the River Cam. Although its name is New Bridge, it is known as "The Bridge of Sighs", because of its resemblence to the Venetian bridge of that name. In Venice, it was the last glimpse of the World for the prisoners on the way to their demise, hence the name. |
| THE Bridge of Sighs, Venice, Italy |
| | A Virtual Community That Cares :-) After I uploaded my "Bridge of Sighs" photograph that you see above, I wished I had a photo of the original one in Venice, Italy. As I was roaming around this site, experiencing others homepages, and exploring into their parts of the World that they have visited, I came across a page on Venice, that was obviously in the works, as are ALL of our pages here. ;-) I simply made an honest comment, that I wanted to see "The Bridge of Sighs", to compare to the "copy" in Cambridge. There was so much helpful and useful information on their pages, I knew it was bound to appear one day when they had time. Their extensive knowledge of the locals and "non-touristy" treasures, that were found on their several visits, was proof to me, this was an area they knew from the heart. Only minutes later, I saw the flashing red arrow reminding me that I have mail here. (I just love that!) To my amazement, there was this lovely pic that you see before you now! Incredibly heartwarming, to me. I replied to thank him, and ask if I may use it here for a comparison shot of the two bridges. He said, "Sure, no credit necessary, use it as you wish." It is so nice to know that there are caring individuals here in this virtual community, that are glad to help in some way or another. :-) Of course, I WANT to give credit, where it is due, and genuinely appreciate his kindness. Please check out their wonderful pages, all about Venice, and many other destinations as well. A lovely couple, and Pa, well, he has a heart of gold, in my opinion. :-) mapakettle Venice, Italy |

Dabs Sat May 5, 2007 15:56 UTC Really well done page on Cambridge, enjoyed the duck tip and debunking the wooden bridge myth :-) | evaanna Sat Jun 3, 2006 07:16 UTC I wish I had tried punting in Oxford. Looks like a wonderful experience. In fact, Cambridge does look a little like Oxford, they both have the Bridge of Sighs, for instance. Nice, well-written page with excellent illustrations. | Sininen Sat Jun 3, 2006 07:01 UTC Hello Elaine! What a great detailed page of Cambridge! It was wonderful to go through it and learn new things. Happy birthday from Finland! | Jenniflower Wed Mar 22, 2006 16:42 UTC Lovely page Elaine - thanks! I also LOVE wandering around charity shops and old car boot sales - wish we had a bigger home for lots of antiques :) Jen x |
