All along the Detroit River, especially in the Parks, you can see the distinctive yellow boxes which contain a floatation device and the warning NO SWIMMING. As the River is very swift, it is not a good idea to try and swim across to Detroit, even though it is only .5 miles to the other side. Many have tried and most have failed. Even the ones that succeeded were promptly picked up by the Coast Guard, RCMP or Detroit/Windsor Police.
Also keep an eye on your children. In some places the bars are wide enough for a small child to get through.
