After driving through Vermont most of the day, we decided we would stay the night in SAINT JOHNSBURY, located in the northeast corner of Vermont. Also, Interstate 91, US Route 2 and US Route 5 run through it.
The town is quite nice and when we were there, the "Colors of the Kingdom Autumn Festival" was going on, so it was quite busy.
In the mid 19th century, St. Johnsbury became a minor manufacturing center, with the main products being maple syrup and scales - the platform scale was invented there by Thaddeus Fairbanks in 1830. Fairbanks Scales is still doing business here after more that 175 years.

Points of Interest
St. Johnsbury Athenaeum
South Congregational Church
St. Johnsbury Academy
Grace United Methodist Church
Fairbanks Museum & Planetarium

One of only ten Athenaeums in the United States, the ST. JOHNSBURY ATHENAEUM is significant because of its construction, the American landscape paintings and books from its original role as a public Library. It was presented to the town in 1871 by Horace Fairbanks, nephew of Thaddeus, the platform scale inventor. It has been recently restored to its original splendor, including the upstairs Lecture Hall with its original woodwork and stenciled ceiling. The building includes an art gallery, home to an amazing collection of Hudson River School originals.
