"SEPTEMBER IN THE AMISH HEARTLAND" Sugarcreek by LoriPori
Sugarcreek Travel Guide: 7 reviews and 28 photos
September in the Amish Heartland means silos being filled with harvested crops, winter wheat being sown, firewood being split and the trees gently exhanging their green summer wardrobe for a brilliant red, yellow and orange one. This is a spectacular time to visit AMISH COUNTRY.
One of the top destinations in Ohio and known far and wide as the "Little Switzerland", SUGARCREEK embraces its heritage with its Swiss-style architecture, especially the Swiss village-like dowtown area where Swiss music fills the air. Uniquely merging its Swill heritage with the surroundng Amish community, the charming village of Sugarcreek is one of Ohio's treasures. Nestled in the heart of the World's largest Amish community, Sugarcreek and the surrounding countryside is home to nearly 35,000 Amish.
Tourists and locals browse and shop Sugarcreek's many furniture stores, craft, quilts and specialty shops. With ten cheese factories located in the area, Sugarcreek is recognized as the center of the Swiss Cheese industry in Ohio.

These places are such a delight. Ohio has some of the neatest hidden gems. Excellent page!
Huch, so much Swissness here! Love the quilts, I'm always quite fascinated by them.
I am puzzled by the Amish. Next time I go to Alsace, I will try to look for their records in Sainte-Marie-aux-Mines, in Montbéliard and in Ohnenheim. I know that former french Amish are now Mennonites but will try to learn more.
I never knew this was the World's largest Amish community.
What an odd combination--Amish and Swiss. Nevertheless, it looks like a fun place to visit with lots of neat things to see.
Glad to see you've discovered the Ohio Amish country. Karen and I love visiting there. Great tips!
Nice pictures and tips on Amish country--lovely photos. I think most people don't realize that Ohio and Indiana have large Amish communities--they mostly only know about the ones in PA.
Wow, I was very surprised seeing Amish culture for the first time. Picturesque architecture of Sugarcreek suits perfectly to Amish buggies. Good idea with Amish Country bus tour.
Surprise to know that so many Amish communities in Ohio. I though they were mainly in Pennsylvania. Thanks for sharing your trip. Cheers, SL
The Amish do indeed make beautiful quilts. Great page and the photos are excellent.
