Before its completion in 1937, the GOLDEN GATE BRIDGE was considered unbuildable because of foggy weather, 60 mile-per-hour winds and strong ocean currents sweeping through a deep rugged canyon below. At a cost of $35 million, the 1.2 mile bridge took more than four years to build. Eleven men lost their lives during construction. Pedestrians and bicyclists are allowed across the bridge on pathways. The bridge toll for vehicles is $5.00, collected when entering San Francisco.

The CABLE CAR was introduced to San Francisco on August 2, 1873 and the idea was conceived by wire-cable manufacturer Andrew Hallidie. The first cable car to descend down Clay Street on Nob Hill was an immediate success. Besides creating a vital link in San Francisco's public transportation system, the cable car opened the door for buildings on steep hills, which until this time was thought to be impossible. San Francisco's beloved cable cars are the only vehicles of their kind still in operation.

MalenaN Sat Apr 26, 2008 07:00 UTC San Francisco is a lovely city, which I haven't visited since 1990. Your tips brought back many good memories. Thanks for that, and for visiting my Scotland page! | Kuznetsov_Sergey Wed Feb 13, 2008 18:21 UTC I wish I ever see Golden Gate Bridge and sing I left my heart in San Francisco! Thanks Lori for reminding I didn't make it yet! Excellent page! May be one day... | Nemorino Sat Sep 22, 2007 20:34 UTC Glad you are so enthusiastic about San Francisco! I lived and worked in Berkeley for several years in the 1960s, and often crossed to bay to visit San Francisco. Also we used to do live radio broadcasts from Alcatraz when it was occupied by the Indians. | traveldave Tue Jun 19, 2007 23:44 UTC One of the great cities of the world. I've been there twice, and enjoyed it each time. I'll definitely have to go back someday. |
