Old-Town Square: OLD TOWN SQUARE

  • Since Prague is a city meant to be walked, that is exactly what we are going to do. By the way, not to confuse my tour with the others, I'll be using a pink polka-dot umbrella. LORIPORI'S WALKING TOUR OF PRAGUE begins in OLD TOWN SQUARE with its famous Astronomical Clock adorning the Old Town Hall. Circling the Square is Our Lady Before Tyn and St. Nicholas Church - Old Town.
"Staromistke' Namisti or Old Town Square is as it has been for centuries -- the HEART of Prague. The Square is always a hub of activity day and night. Towering above the Square is Our Lady Before Tyne.

Things To Do: THE ASTRONOMICAL CLOCK

  • The Old Town Square's top draw is the famous ASTRONOMICALCLOCK adorning the Old Town Tower. Constructed in 1410, visitors who flock into the Square, are often astounded by the clock's detailed mechanical movements which include a bell tolling skeleton, a crowing rooster and the twelve apostles circling the clock face.

  • From the top of the OLD TOWN TOWER , which has a 230 foot spire, you have an awesome view of the Old Town Square.
A ticket for the observation deck was 40 CZK or $2.00 CDN.

  • Towering over Old Town Square is OUR LADY BEFORE TYN or Tyn Cathedral. The Church was started in the latter 14th century and took the next few centuries to complete. With its 80 meter high spires, Tyn Cathedral is believed to be the most impressive example of Gothic architecture in Prague.

  • Built in 1735, ST. NICHOLAS CHURCH - OLD TOWN is pleasing to the eye with its creamy Barocque facade, filled with Saints and Icons. St. Nicholas sits on the corner of the Old Town Square where Parizska Street branches off toward the Jewish Quarter where the next part of our tour will take us.

    Things To Do: JEWISH QUARTER

  • We now will walk down Parizska Street, where we come to the JEWISH QUARTER, in the Josefov Section of Prague, with its Old-New Synagogue, Old Jewish Cemetery, the Jewish Museum, the Spanish Synagogue and statue of the famous Jewish writer Franz Kafka.
Prague's Jewish Community dates back to the 10th century and is the only Central European Jewish Town Quarter that survived the Holocaust.
The accompanying picture is of the beautiful Spanish Synagogue which was built in 1868 in a unique Moorish style and is located on Shiroka Street.

Jewish Town and Synagogues: OLD - NEW SYNAGOGUE

  • Built in 1270, the OLD-NEW SYNAGOGUE or Staranova Synagoga, is the oldest Synagogue in Europe where services are still held regularly.
The entrance fee to the Old-New Synagogue was quite steep in my opinion. It was 290 CZK or about $15.00 CDN as compared to most of the churches which charged 50 CZK.

  • As we leave the Jewish Quarter, we now head for WENCESLAS SQUARE the Heart of modern Prague and the place where the Czechs love to gather.
Wenceslas Square or Vaclavske Namesti, which was originally a Horse Market, is lined with Hotels ( including the famous Europa Hotel ),restaurants and specialty shops. The rectangular-shaped Wenceslas Square is the main commercial district of Prague.
It was here that the first mass protest of the Velvet Revolution took place in November, 1989, leading to the downfall of the Communist Regime.
With its beautiful landscaped gardens and plenty of benches to sit on, it's a great place to relax and people watch, which Hans and I really enjoyed.

Wenceslas Square: SAINT WENCESLAS --- ST. VACLAV

  • The Huge statue of SAINT WENCESLAS or St. Vaclav is located at the top of the Hill overlooking the Square with the National Museum in the background.
A tenth century Duke of Bohemia, Wenceslas is considered a symbol of Czech Nationalism.
I debated whether or not to use this accompanying picture of St. Wenceslas as it was so dark. But actually the silouette of the King on his bronze steed is better than a clearer picture I had with the King surrounded by tacky scaffolding. Actually the whole monument was covered in tacky scaffolding which was very disappointing.

  • Located at the top of the hill in Wenceslas Square is the dark and gloomy NATIONAL MUSEUM. A refreshing fountain dances in front to liven things up a bit. Hans and I didn't go inside as it wasn't open the day we were there. Apparently it's closed on Tuesdays.
    Usually open 10 - 6 p.m.

THE STORCH HOUSE and the TANCICI DUM DANCING HOUSE looks marvelous. You've put together a wonderful page filled with lovely photos and tips. Thanks for sharing your tour!

Excellent page on this wonderful city. Beautiful pictures of great architecture, of which I especially liked the Minute House. I agree that knedliczki are more like cooked bread than dumplings. Thanks for the warning about the boat trip.

Lori, enjoyed your Prague pages...but it did not stop raining because you touched the Nepomuk dog with your right hand (should use LEFT, hehehe)...love pic of you and Hansi by the bridge and him with the Menu sign -- great one!
