ANTWERP VT MEETING - August 3, 2005

by LoriPori - last update: Dec 9, 2005

RAIN RAIN GO AWAY -- WE HAVE A VT MEET TODAY

Antwerp City Hall
Wednesday, August 3, 2005
Our VT meeting began at the National Scheepvaartmuseum. After some of us went through the museum, we then began to walk to the Market Square. Well wouldn't you know, it got very windy and started to rain. We headed for an outdoor patio with huge umbrellas and thought we would be dry. But Noooo! A river of water went by under our feet. We could even see leaves floating by, powered by the current of water. We had to laugh and despite the deluge we had a wonderful time. When it finally stopped we ventured out again and managed to get a glimpse of the Stadhuis and Market. We caught a bus that would bring us to Miniatuurstad -- a miniature version of the city of Antwerp which was very interesting and then headed for the meeting place for dinner -- T'Pakhuis.

A LITTLE BIT ABOUT ANTWERP

The city of ANTWERP , a great city in Belgium, is located on the Scheldt River, close to the North Sea. Besides being the most important center of business in Belgium, Antwerp is also famous for its cathedral and art treasrures. The great Cathedral of Our Lady is one of the largest in Europe and has a spire 400 feet high. Inside the cathedral are some of the great paintings of such famous artists as Rubens and Van Dyck.
Diamond-cutting is one of Antwerp's biggest businesses. Here, rough diamonds are cut and polished by skilled diamond-cutters until they become the brilliant shining stones that we see in jewellery stores.

Antwerp looks like a great city with so much to see. Loved the cathedral with its excellent lacy decorations and the Guild Houses. The legend of Brabo is most interesting.

My wife would love this ANTWERP MINIATUURSTAD since we saw a similar miniature city in Australia (Cockington Green) and she likes little houses...and I on the other hand love Maritime museums and big market squares...Norman :)

Excellent page,Lori. The saga re name of Antwerp is very interesting story.Diamond-cutting is done here for De Beers, andprobably most of the world, as you point out. Lovely architecture with pics to demonstrate.
