  • One of the most beautiful and recognizable bridges in the world is London's TOWER BRIDGE. Completed in 1894, it took 8 years and 11,000 tons of steel to build.
Spanning the Thames River, the overall length of the Bridge is 800 feet and two distinctive towers support a 200 foot span between them which can open and be raised upward in the middle to allow ships to pass.

Tower of London: THE TOWER OF LONDON

  • The TOWER OF LONDON was the prison you got sent to if you upset the King or Queen. Often it was nobles themselves who were inprisoned as they had more contact with the monarch and were more likely to fall from grace.
The Tower of London is the nation's leading historic visitor attraction. This ancient fortress was founded by William the Conquerer and over 900 years of British history have been played out between its walls. It was here that Ann Boleyn was executed, Guy Fawkes interrogated, Richard II and Elizabeth I incarcerated.

  • New permanent displays on the theme of prisoners have been installed in the Bloody Tower and Beauchamp Tower at the Tower of London. The new displays incorporate the latest audio and visual effects to create an exciting and interactive experience for visitors. Learn how prisoners spent their time while confined in these rooms and contemplate the reality of Tower imprisonment.
Ravens ( in one of the small pix ) are kept because of a legend that says that the tower and therefore the Monarchy will collapse if the Ravens leave, so a few are kept on hand --- Just in case!!!

  • If you took the River Thames Cruise, as you passed by the Tower of London, you had to notice ENTRY TO THE TRAITOR'S GATE, which was used as the landing for the Crown's enemies. All important prisoners entered the Tower through this gate.
The accompanying picture shows most of the Gate as it is low tide.

Things To Do: HORSE GUARDS' PARADE

  • One of my favourite touristy things about London is observing the HORSE GUARDS' PARADE. I love the colourful tunics, especially the red ones and the cool headgear, but most of all I love the majestic horses.
Horse Guards is the traditional entrance to the Royal Palace and is still guarded by mounted sentries from the Queen's Cavalry. The Guard Changing Ceremony takes place weekdays at 11:00 a.m. and 10:00 a.m. Sundays. It is at this time that twelve mounted troops in traditional costume arrive from their Hyde Park Barracks.

    River Thames: THAMES RIVER CRUISE

  • A trip to London would not be complete without a THAMES RIVER CRUISE. There is commentary along the way, informing you of the places of interest that you are passing by. On Hans' trip to London for the VT Meeting, he went with Carmen and Stace on the Thames Circular Cruise.
Many of London's tourist sights can be seen from the River. These include the Houses of Parliament, Big Ben, the London Eye, Shakespeare's Globe Theatre, St. Paul's Cathedral, the Tower of London and the Tower Bridge.
According to the Brochure, "Circular Cruise Fares" are as follows:
    Adult 6.80
    Child 3.40
    Student & Seniors 5.80
Group rate for 10 or more people is available

  • The clock inside the 316 foot clock-tower, has been keeping accurate time to the second, since it became operational in 1859. In addition to the four large clock faces, this tower also supports five large bells which chime their tune every 15 minutes. BIG BEN is actually the 13.5 ton bell inside the clock-tower.
