WELCOME TO LORIPORI'S LONDON PAGE I've had the privilege of visiting London, England on three different occasions. The first two times were in 1968 and 1969 when I was 20 and 21 years of age. Both times I went on a chaperoned tour with an organized school trip. In 1968 we visited Buckingham Palace, The Tower of London, St. Paul's Cathedral, Piccadilly Circus, Madame Tussaud's Wax Museum where they just had a new exhibit of the rage of the time "THE BEATLES", Westminster Abbey and Big Ben, Hampton Court Palace in Middlesex and Windsor Castle. We also took in a show at the London Palladium featuring Sammy Davis Jr. in "Golden Boy". What a thrill that was! The following year, 1969, a group of us took in "The Fiddler on the Roof" which was performed at Her Majesty's Theatre in Haymarket. ( I still have the original ticket stub in my scrapbook ). On July 8, 1992 we took our children Nicole who was 20 at the time and Brian who was 18, on a tour of London. We were holidaying in Holland at the time. We departed from the docks of Hoek van Holland, on the Stena Line. We took the 'nachtboot' ( Night boat ) across the English Channel. We were provided with a cabin for overnight sleeping. If I remember correctly my two children didn;t sleep much that night as they discovered a disco on board the ship. We arrived the next morning, in Harwich where we all took a train to London. We were provided with a "Visitor Travel Card" which entitled us to all modes of transportation for the entire day - train - double deckers - Subway. I wanted to show them as much as we possible could. We visited Big Ben and Westminister Abbey, Trafalgar Square, Buckingham Palace with the Changing of the Guards, Piccadilly Circus and Hard Rock Cafe' where we had to buy t-shirts of course. Also too a Thames River Cruise. All this in one day. We had to get on the 7 p.m. train back to Harwich and took the 9. p.m. "Nachtboot" back to Hoek van Holland. The pictures in the tips are all from Hans' VT London Meeting in January. Hans took some snappies of some old pictures which I have l put in the travelogues. |
| | THE TOWER OF LONDON The TOWER OF LONDON was the prison you got sent to if you upset the King or Queen. Often it was nobles themselves who were inprisoned as they had more contact with the monarch and were more likely to fall from grace. The Tower of London is the nation's leading historic visitor attraction. This ancient fortress was founded by William the Conquerer and over 900 years of British history have been played out between its walls. It was here that Ann Boleyn was executed, Guy Fawkes interrogated, Richard II and Elizabeth I incarcerated. |
TOWER BRIDGE One of the most beautiful and recognizable bridges in the world is London's TOWER BRIDGE. Completed in 1894, it took 8 years and 11,000 tons of steel to build. Spanning the Thames River, the overall length of the Bridge is 800 feet and two distinctive towers support a 200 foot span between them which can open and be raised upward in the middle to allow ships to pass. | | |
