Wednesday September 10, 2008 YORK is definitely a walking city as most of its attractions can be accessed by foot. King George VI commented once that "The History of York is the History of England." Hans and I brought our 'brellies' along - but no need. It was a beautiful, sunny, bright blue skies day for our visit to York. It is truly a fascinating city. During our day visit to York, we visited mostly York Minster and The Shambles, but it has so much more to offer, that you really need more time here. I want to thank Gillian (Gillybob) for suggesting to us, to come to this historic city. |
| | THE SHAMBLES When I first laid my eyes upon THE SHAMBLES, I felt like I had been transported back to the Elizabethan period. Here was this incredibly cute, narrow and cobbled medieval street, the oldest street in York. There were picturesque timber-framed buildings - some dating to the 14th century with the oldest being circa 1350.The buildings actually lean into the middle of the cobbled streets, with the roofs almost touching in the middle. Shambles comes from the Saxon "fleshammels" which means "street of the Butchers" for it was here that the city's butchers' market was located. Today, the Shambles is one of the UK's most visited, with a wealth of shopping, restaurants and tourist attractions. |
YORK MINSTER The second largest Gothic Cathedral in Northern Europe (largest is Cologne Cathedral) is York's most Iconic Landmark. YORK MINSTER was built over a span of 250 years. The present building was begun in 1230 and completed in 1472. The Minster is 158 metres long and each of its three towers are 60 metres high. The place was Huge. I can't describe my feeling when I first laid my eyes upon it. Besides the Mosque/Cathedral in Cordoba, Spain, I have never seen anything so magnificent. | | | West Front - View from Low Petergate |
