"FERIA DEL CABALLO 2006" Jerez de la Frontera by LoriPori
Jerez de la Frontera Travel Guide: 201 reviews and 562 photos
One of the oldest and largest fairs in Andalucia the FAIR OF THE HORSE or Feria del Caballo, was held from May 7 to May 14 in Parque Gonzalez Hontoria, which is on Avenida Alcalde Alvara Domeque. The "Walk of Horses" is a show of grandeur as hundreds of horsemen of all ages parade with elegance through the fairgrounds..
I truly loved and enjoyed this " cultural experience". It is a celebration of all the things that Jerez is famous for and which Andalucians love - SHERRY - FLAMENCO - BULLFIGHTING and HORSES.
But what is even more important is that Hans and I got to share this experience with our dear friends Carmen and Stace & Andrew and Liz.
The "Feria Del Caballo" is celebrated at the PARQUE GONZALEZ HONTORIA. Constructed in 1902 to host the Fair, the fairgrounds are massive , with a total of 52,000 square metres of space to accommodate the spectacle in which hundreds of riders participate in this traditional Spanish Horse Festival.
Rows of "Casetas" or bars line the parade areas.
Jerez is well known for Horses and Sherry. It is Spain's capital for Horse breeding and a destination for horse-lovers from all over the world who meet here each year for the FERIA DEL CABALLO. It started in 1289 as a livestock market and has developed into a show of the most beautiful horses in Spain. Nobles and VIP's, their wives, children and families, parade through the fairgrounds until the wee hours of the morning.

I depart tomor for Madrid and then down to Jerez, and just by accident going to be there for the FERIA'! as I was an equestrian in my early life, it should be wonderful!!
Very nice indeed. Pity I won't be there for the Feria, but I do have tickets for the Horse Show at the Royal Equestrian School. Thanks for some really great photos.
Thanks Lori for showing us this Spain's capital for horse breeding! Wonderful pics and interesting tips, as usual!
