"AVIGNON AND ORANGE" Avignon by LoriPori

Avignon Travel Guide: 505 reviews and 1,483 photos

Hans, Wim and I visited AVIGNON and ORANGE September 25, 2000. We found both places to be enchanting and rich in history.
AVIGNON located in Provence-Alpes-Cote D'Azur, is a charming city in the southeastern part of France on the Rhone River. It is a very ancient city and was part of the Roman Empire more than two thousand years ago.

Orange has a well-preserved Roman Theatre, with a prominant statue of Augustus, that is still used for concerts during the summer festival.

Thanks for a taste of avignon. I knew the popes were there but not much more really. The largest gothic palace, the roman theatre, gorgeous!

I would have to say Avignon. Also be sure to see Pont du Gard, tho it is a little more difficult to get there. We went by car, so I am not sure if there is any type of public transportation that brings you there. A good question to ask in the travel forum.

Loved your pictures and descriptions of the gorgeous architecture. Le Pont d'Avignon must be a great place to visit with the wonderful view it offers.

Interesting tip about former residence of Popes! I had now idea about this. Thanks for that info. Avignon looks interesting- the LE PONT D'AVIGNON is in good shape-even after all these years. Nice pictures too, Lori.

Lori, fabulous little page about this famous French town. I must admit that I haven't explored much of France yet.

Your tips and photos bring back nice memories of my visits to Avignon and Orange on a bicycle tour in May 1963.

Avignon has long been on my wish list but I wasn't aware of the attractions in nearby Orange - that theatre looks great!
