"EL VIEJO ( OLD ) SAN JUAN" San Juan by LoriPori
San Juan Travel Guide: 689 reviews and 2,183 photos
Puerto Rico is an island between the Caribbean Sea and the North Atlantic Ocean, east of the Dominican Republic and 1600 km southeast of Miami Florida. San Juan, known as "La Ciudad Amurallada" or ( the Walled City ) is a major port and tourist resort of the West Indies. The city was used as a stopover for ships that came from Spain and the stronghold "El Morro" was built to prevent the enemy from taking control of the island.
The cobblestoned streets, balconies, buildings in a tapestry of pastel colours and quaint old Churches and Chapels, make this historic city a charming and picturesque place to visit.
A well-known landmark in San Juan is the CASTILLO DE SAN FELIPE DEL MORRO or "EL MORRO". The Spaniards began construction in 1539. Francis Drake and the British attacked it and later on in 1625 so did the Dutch.
Today this World Heritage Site welcomes multitudes of tourists arriving by cruise ship. We were four of them - Hans & I and His brother and his wife from Florida. We had a wonderful time exploring the nooks and crannies of El Morro. I was intrigued by the little circular sentry cubicles or "Garitas" that are unique to this fortification, the largest in the Caribbean.
February 3 to 10 2002
As Hans and I wanted to celebrate our 30 th anniversary with a Cruise, we made arrangements with Hans' brother and his wife who live in Florida to take a cruise together. We decided on going with Royal Caribbean. The stops included San Juan Puerto Rico, Philipsburg St. Martin, Charlotte Amalie St. Thomas Virgin Islands and Nassau Bahamas.
We departed from Fort Lauderdale Florida on the ship ENCHANTMENT OF THE SEAS and our first stop was in San Juan Puerto Rico.We arrived Tuesday February 5 at 3:00 p.m. and we were to depart at 9:30 p.m. so that gave us plenty of time to explore the Historic town of San Juan.
- Pros:Charming Historic Old Town

Nice page!! We have visited PR twice via cruise ship and enjoyed it very much. In the 80's our cruise ship line gave us our own day room at the Condado Plaza before boarding the ship!! Those were the days!
I took over 12 trips here in 1970's and not a picture to find. Thanks for the nice memories of sites and your comments, as usual are very helpful.
It's always a great pleasure to read about your tips and enjoy your pictures. Thanx for sharing.
Celebrate your 30th anniversary with a Cruise...how romantic! Thanks for the info Lori:)
What a lovely way to celebrate your wedding anniversary, Lori. San Juan looks pretty. Especially the CASTILLO DE SAN CRISTOBAL. Even the cemetary is interesting! Thanks
Hi Lori! I booked a little trip for us to San Juan this June. I'm hoping to see some of the places you saw - specially the Castillos and the Columbus Tribute...Hugs, Norman :)
Lori, gorgeous little page about San Juan. It looks like you enjoyed a lovely trip at your 30th anniversairy. Well done.
Would like to visit SJ on a cruise. Looks an interesting place. I like scrapbooking on the countries I have visited too, found some, usually the poorer ones, do not have brochures to give away.
It was a fine virtual tour with you and Hans in order to escape our Belgian cloudy sky.
Nice page of San Juan. I enjoyed reading your well written tips.
