    General Tips: THE ROMAN TEMPLE

  • Favorite Thing: This Roman Temple has been known as the MAISON CARREE, since the sixteenth century. In old French, any rectangle with four corners was referred to as a "carree'". The only completely preserved Roman temple, the Maison Carree has harmonious proportions, elegant slender columns with Corinthean capitals and architectural decoration of great finesse.
In a raised position on a high base, it dominated the forum of the Roman town. This large square, forming the centre of public life, was enclosed by a portico, traces of which remain in the form of a few bases of columns visible at the site.
Inside is an exhibition on the history of the Temple.

  • Favorite Thing: The AMPHITHEATRE in Nimes is one of the best preserved in the whole of the Roman world and shows the installations that architects at the end of the 1st century AD designed for this type of structure, which was intended for the presentation of animal or gladiator combats.
There was seating room for over 23,000 spectators on the 34 terraces of the cavea. Different social ranks sat in different areas. The public could reach their seats through 5 galleries at different levels and by way of numerous staircases.

  • Favorite Thing: Built at the end of the first century AD, the amphitheatre LES ARENES in Nimes is among the largest in Roman Gaul. It is approximately l33m long and 21m high, has two levels, each with 60 arches.
It is the best preserved Roman amphitheatre in the world today. The know-how of modern architects and mastery of heating systems is now added to the skill of the Roman builders. It is still in use today for concerts and other venues.
