Moscow is a fascinating city. It has some spectacular sites and some areas you want to keep well away from. It has extremely rich and extremely poor. It has very kind hearted people and hugely corrupt ones. Whilst this probably goes for many places, Russia and Moscow have real extremes. The exaggeration is greater here than any other place I have been to.
To give an example, I left on a train to head down towards Romania and Bulgaria. When I got on the train, I found I was sharing a small 4 berth compartment with three other Russian guys. Two of whom were importing car parts out of Russia, and had huge amounts of luggage. A short while after leaving Moscow, the conductor for the carraige I was in came in and saw all of the luggage. You have too much luggage she said, you have to pay a fine, it's $10, or $5 if you don't want a ticket (i.e. the money goes in her own back pocket). A while later, the conductor for the whole train came in, and proceeded to pull the same stunt. At the border, the border guard came in and threw the two budding entrepreneurs off the train and sent them back to Moscow as they couldn't afford the bribe. This must be a huge problem in Russia, as any little get up and go someone has to make a little money is snuffed out at the earliest opportunity.
- Pros:Beautiful City with wonderful sites
- Cons:Be very careful with your possessions
- In a nutshell:A Grand Capital City

An interesting page about a fascinating city. I'd really love to visit Moscow and Russia someday.
Fabulous page Andy - love the Gagarin monument photo!!
Nice tips about Russia! Hope you liked my country :)
An interesting glimps into Moscow and the Russian people. You did a terrific job on this short page. I also would like to see and read more.
Nice job. I hope there's more.
Fascinating!
You made a real glastnost in my way of facing Moscow, now I will have to make a perestroika in my pocket to be able to go there one day!!! HAHAHAHAHA :)
Great Russian Engineering... a Bell that never tolled, a cannon never fired...and blindness comes to those who build beautiful structures... irony?
An excellent page with lots of amazing photos! I loved the obscure details in your tips, especially regarding the big bell. Great stuff Andy!
Both Mao and Lenin ended up as tourist attractions in their final resting places. I'm trying to think of where else in the world you can stand in line to see a dead body on permanent display. Kim Il Sung and Ho Chi Minh come to mind.
