"Hong Kong - the gateway to China" Hong Kong by easyoar

I first went to Hong Kong in December 2000. In those days it still felt like the honeymoon period of China replacing Britain was still going strong. Most people seemed very happy China had taken over. Roll forward 4 years, and the story seems somewhat different. People seem somewhat bitter that Britain is still not in charge and feel upset that they were never consulted on the deal.
However most tourists do not need to worry about such things. Hong Kong still remains a much more liberated place than the Chinese mainland, and the sights are still much the same. Probably the most impressive site in Hong Kong is at night from Victoria Peak. The best way to get there (well the most atmospheric way anyway) is from Kowloon. Taking the Star Ferry over to Hong Kong Island (a must-do in itself). Then the Peak Tram with its incredibly steep ascent, up to the Peak. Then just admire the view!
Other things well worth seeing/doing in Hong Kong are the Noonday Gun (or is that Noon Day?), the street markets (such as Temple Street Night Market) and the tax free shopping!

Now I really can't wait to go to HK:)
What an awesome tip. Solved a problem actually.
In 1958 this small police station was my home, I was married to a police inspector and we were expecting our first child there were no married quarters availableso we lived in single quarters.
Ha ha ha!
Hong Kong is one of my favorite cities in the world. The view from Victoria Peak is stunning, and must be one of the world's great views.
Liked the British influences here! So glad you did not go into the shop - interesting page!
Woops! Did I rate these pages before...something looks familiar? Well still I never get tired of pics from HK. Was based out of HK on my '86 and '87 RTW trip. Was a real CASABLANCA of Asia when I was there with scams galore.Tim
Hahaha - fines for electrocuting and poisoning fish, and shops called Wanko - what a place!! :) Great flavour! how've things been Andy, been awhile since I stumbled onto your pages. Ciao.
Great pictures and tips. Your Warnings are quite funny! Nice Hong Kong page!
On the "fishing" sign, the scary thing is quite a lot of folks tried to catch fish by those forbidden ways.
