| Ewelme's Almshouses and Church |
Ewelme is a very small old village in Oxfordshire that lies roughly half way between Reading and Oxford.
A large amount of what exists there today was built in the 1400's, and notable examples are the Church of St Marys, the Almshouses and the local school.
If you want to see an old traditional British Village, then it makes a good choice. It is very, very quiet, and not many tourists or visitors really go there, so it is quite off the beaten path. |
| Decoration on Ewelme School |
| | There is quite a lot of small bits of decoration in Ewelme. This is one of the ornaments on ths side of the school. There are also gargoyles on the church.
Another point of interest is that Jerome K Jerome is buried here (the author of three men in a boat), as is the son and grand-daughter of Geoffrey Chaucer the famous poet who wrote the canterbury Tales. |
