Giant Sea Shell - Aldeburgh - Thorpeness

Giant Sea Shell - Aldeburgh

Giant Sea Shell

This has been a very controversial local project. It sits on the beach, more or less midway between Thorpeness and Aldeburgh (although it is probably closer to Aldeburgh, and is officially part of Aldeburgh. I fail to have any comprehension of why this is controversial. It is near no hosing, it is just on the beach. It also is nothing especially unusual.

The writing on the top part of the shell (on the left as you look at my picture) commemorates the well known composer Benjamin Britten who used to live in Aldeburgh. The sculpture is a giant scallop shell that was designed by Maggi Hambling.

Aldeburgh Moot Hall - Thorpeness

Aldeburgh Moot Hall

Aldeburgh

Just down the coast from Thorpeness is Aldeburgh. This is another popular holiday town, which shares the same shingle beach that runs down the coast from Thorpeness. It therefore makes a good coastal walk. This is still a fishing village at heart, and has lots of fishing boats up on the beach. it is easy to buy fresh fish direct from the fishermens huts on the beach front.

The town also has some nice old buildings. The oldest may well be the Moot Hall which is also the Town Hall. Even the public toilets look to have had considerable design put into them so as not to appear an ugly building. There are many more shops/cafes/restaurants in Aldeburgh than there are in Thorpeness, and if I had to pick one of the two to stay in, it would be Aldeburgh, although I would definitely visit Thorpeness whilst I was there.
