A Totem Pole is native art from the indigenous peoples of North America (frequently [and incorrectly] referred to as Indians). A Totem Pole is supposed to represent the family tree of a tribe. The ornately carved figures are to show the mythical ancestors of the tribe that carved it. This totem pole was carved by Chief Mungo Martin who is from the Kwakiutl people who live along the coast line of Vancouver Island and British Columbia. The pole itself is the trunk of a 600 year old, red cedar tree. If you look carefully, you may see the following figures: A man with a large hat, A Beaver, An Old Man, A Thunderbird, A Sea Otter, A Raven, A Whale, A Double-headed Snake, A Halibut Man and a Cedar Man. But don't ask me what all of these things are supposed to be!

MikeBird Wed Oct 15, 2008 21:10 UTC I wonder if the Ruddy Ducks have a go at the swans! Now that would be an ugly duckling........ | craic Sat Oct 20, 2007 23:06 UTC oh those ruddy ducks! | pine2903 Sun Jul 23, 2006 21:26 UTC 'No swimming'? It was difficult for me to understand why you are not supposed to swim in the lake. I found a good place to get into water and enjoyed swimming. But I would be happy if someone advised me on places to swim in this area. pine2903@yahoo.co.uk | Mariajoy Sat Jul 22, 2006 08:06 UTC Nice page Andy. I've never been but it might be worth it just to check out that huge Totem pole! I read recently that it was considered bad luck by American Indians to have the biggest pole in the village!! |
