In Spain, there are semi-autonomous regions that have some reponsibility for their own affairs. These semi-autonomous regions have capital cities. Cuenca is both a semi-autonomous region, and the capital city. This page will hopefully explore a bit of both.
To most people who have visited however Cuenca is symbolised by two things. The old part of the town, and the Enchanted City.
The Old Town is actually quite a small area, up on top of a very steep hill. The buildings for the most part are very old and picturesque, and the streets are pretty narrow.
The Enchanted City is a large parkland area with a lot of very curiously shaped rocks which bear an uncanny resemblance to other objects. Some amazingly so, others need a bit of imagination and then some!
- Pros:Wild and beautiful scenery
- Cons:Out in the sticks
- In a nutshell:A great daytrip or two from Madrid

I was seeing the shapes right up to the elephant and crocodile and then.... Maybe that was a magic mushroom ;-)
Nice commentary on the rock formations around Cuenca.
Great page, lovely pictures and good writings. I didn't visit Cuenca, my mistake, I see.
What a fascinating part of Spain. I was intrigued by the Hanging houses. I guess if they haven't fallen off by now, they never will. The Parador is wonderful and it does remind me of Ronda, another beautiful Spanish city. Lori.
It was a delight to take a tour of a favorite spot, Cuenca. You've done such a spectacular job with your descriptions and your photographs.
did you happen to pass the man from la mancha on the way?
nice info thank#ss
Andy I hadn't heard of Cuenca it looks like a great spot in Spain too :-)
Hi Andy, it was pleasure reading your tips. The Ciudad Encantada tips are great. Dont know who put these low ratings but I think they you dont deserve such low ratings at all... Hope more people will see this page and change this :)))
