Valladolid

Valladolid used to be the capital of Spain before Madrid. Many very impressive buildings were built around this time, and many of them still stand today. That is the good news.

The bad news is that more recently, the town planners (you mean to say there were some?) allowed a mega sprawl to develop which totally engulfs anything nice that remains. I once read in a travel guide book, that the only time you should visit Valladolid should be at Easter time (they do a nice procession). At the time I agreed wholeheartedly with this summary (not that it won me many friends there!). I have reason to visit Valladolid regularly, and I do have to admit that more recently things have started to improve. The Plaza Mayor (Central Square) has been nicely renovated and more work elsewhere is currently ongoing - but a lot more needs to be done. Another reason not to go there is that without doubt they make the worst bread I have ever tasted (although Moscow ran it a close race). I can only describe it as tasting as a stage prop loaf (i.e. its taste and texture is reminiscent of plaster of paris.

Nice page! However the worst bread I tasted was in the UK, well apart from rainbow toast bread in USA maybe... :)

Just read you spent SS here overdosing on processions. Bought a new €500 flash for SS, was all ready for it.. then.. passed half the week in hospital and the other half horizontal in bed. Fool I am, I fell off a ladder. Hoping to see your SS pics soon :0)

FINALLY, I've read a VT page and NOT had to add this location to my list of places to see, hahaha! Too bad about the sprawl - tons of U.S. cities suffer from it as well.
