| | Climate, Weather, and Attire In this tropical zone, Singapore has only one season – summer. The weather is always warm and humid, with temperature ranging from 24 to 32 degrees Celsius. Light summer clothing will be suitable for everyday wear. An umbrella would come in handy, to shield from the sun or rain. |
Population, Races and Religions Our tiny 682.3 km 2 republic has a population close to four million people. There is a diversity of races in Singapore. The Chinese make up 77 percent of the population. The remainder consists of a blend of Malay (14 percent), Indian (8 percent) and ethnic groups including Eurasians, descendants of families from Portuguese colonies of Malacca in Malaysia and Goa in India. Besides, there are also small Armenian, Arab and Jewish communities.
the variety of religions in Singapore reflects the diversity of races living here. The Chinese are predominantly Buddhists, Taoists, Shenists, Christians, Catholics and some considered as ‘free-thinkers’ (those who do not believe in any religion). Malays who believe in Islam are called the Muslims. Indians are mostly Hindus, with a significant number of Christians, Sikhs and Muslims. Religious tolerance is essential in Singapore. Religions often cross racial boundaries and some even merge in unusual ways in this modern nation. Younger generation of Singaporeans tend to combine a little of the mysteries of the older generation with the realistic world that they know of today.
There are several languages used in Singapore, including English, Chinese, Malay and Hindu. The official language here is English. So communication should not be a problem as long as you understand English. | | |
